What is Occupational Therapy?

What is Occupational Therapy? Many people think occupational therapists help people find jobs — which we do not. We treat and support people of all ages with a disability, a delay, or an injury which interferes with their daily functioning. We use meaningful activities as therapeutic tools to improve participation in daily life or the "occupations" of daily living. We help people to become more self-sufficient when dressing, eating, playing, learning, engaging in hobbies, working, or taking care of their families. We help improve skills and adapt activities for greater independence. We educate others and make environmental modifications in order to promote wellness and independence. What a great way to spend your days! A young child has two primary occupations — to play and to learn. When supporting young children, an occupational therapist uses this lens to help children participate fully in the occupations of childhood.

About Stephanie

Parenthood has given me the insight that if something isn’t easy to incorporate into a daily routine, it simply won’t get done. Working alongside talented early educators for so long has been a joy and honor, as well as a journey and a learning process. As a practicing therapist for over 20 years, Write Beginnings Occupational Therapy Services became an outgrowth of what I love to do best — sharing my perspective on child development with teachers and parents to enhance the work they do each day.

Adding fun and developmentally appropriate activities to the daily grind by serving it up at mealtimes, packing it into car trips, tucking it into bedtime routines, and infusing it into play routines at school is the best way to build skills, cooperation, and confidence in children. Most teachers and parents have a lot to juggle, so I especially like to share professional strategies that are easy, inexpensive, and fun for teachers and parents to incorporate into their daily routines at school and at home.

What is Write Beginnings?

Write Beginnings Occupational Therapy Services specializes in sharing knowledge and delivering comprehensive trainings for preschool teachers and families, enhancing their understanding of fine motor skill development and sensory processing in young children. Not all preschool teachers receive specialized training in motor development and sensory processing, which can make knowing how to support kids with motor delays or sensory differences really challenging. I’m here to help!

I aim to create learning environments where every young student's motor skills and sensory preferences are not just recognized but nurtured, and where educators are empowered with the skills they need to support a child’s development and comfort. I’m so glad we are on this journey together! Whether you have questions about a program or you're just looking to learn more, I'd love to hear from you.

Stay connected for more resources, tips, and insights to support you as you care for the young children in your life.

Enjoy!
